The Conventional Solution
There are two types of non-laser solutions. The first is chemical peels, in which certain chemicals, like glycolic acid, are applied on the face, to remove a thin layer of skin from its surface. This causes a fine injury to the skin, which leads to skin healing, and subsequent improvement in the tone of the skin, and its pigmentation. It can also lead to improvement in the wrinkles and acne scars.

The second technique is microdermabrasion, in which fine sandy crystals are blown over the skin, causing the upper skin layers to be removed. This is similar to sand blasting.

Both these techniques (available at LaseRx) are good, and can have good effects in experienced hands. However, they cause only superficial injury, and so the result is not tremendous, and requires many sessions. If the doctor is too aggressive, in the quest for quick results, then a non-controlled injury to the skin can occur, which results in scarring of the skin.
