All bleaching (whether laser or conventional) is done by release of free radical oxygen from peroxides, like hydrogen peroxide. In the case of home bleaching, the concentration of peroxides is very low, owing to the long exposure time. In the case of office bleaching, ordinary light is used to excite the bleaching agent and promote faster release of the bleaching agent.
In the case of the laser, the bleaching gel has special colorants to match the wavelength of the laser. Therefore, there is a very quick and complete release of the free radical oxygen, allowing the use of a more concentrated peroxide solution and a very quick and effective bleaching procedure.
A 980 nm diode laser from Biolitec is used to carry out the bleaching procedure. |
